CodeDayDC renewed our hope for the future of kids and programing.

While with every hackathon where are winners in this one CodeDayDC there were so many great starts, attempts at super gaming; one hack that could be used to help the disabled, elders and hospital patients with computing and home automation and even a great start on a pet information website.

awesomeappSo what’s CodeDay any who?  It’s a 24 hour student hackathon happening in Citys across the USA that started on Saturday at noon and ended noon on Sunday.   DC had six teams assembled to code for 24 hours to develop an applications, game or website and HEF, founder Nelson Jacobsen was lucky enough to be one of the guest judges.

With a number of awards where up for grabs which included a gift bag, we’ll have to find out what was in them and mostly the chance for these students to get a chance to work on something that excites them enough to come out for 24 hours of coding.    From all of the final projects that we’re reviewed it was clear that all of the participates came away with something making them all winners.

However, The stand out winners were a team that in just 24 hours came in with a plan, executed it and won Best Overall and the CrowdFav as voted on by the other 6 teams – Big Poppa, Sorry we cut off one of the kids and would let him photoshop it to fix that…)

This team came up with a game that was based upon a ancient myth that allowed players to battle it out with Kali. And, everyone agreed that it was a home run effort and I have to say that they’ve done what some startups never do and that is ship a game that operates in 24 hours let alone a year.

We’d like to Congratulate Viet and Loran and the folks at Apollo Matrix, Inc for a great CodeDay.org #DC

Help launch a District Record Plant w/GOFundme campaign DC

The Vinyl revolution that was restarted in the middle-late-oughts 2006-08 has now come full circle and just like in 1995 when the Independent started to gain market share with the advent of lower cost of CD duplications and mastering facilities compared to phonographic records.  However today with only 15 fully operating vinyl plants in the USA the Majors have come to Occupy the majority of the production capabilites.   This will showup and bite us all in a number of ways.

#1 Cost to make a vinyl record is now going through the roof based upon availability and majors have milions to throw in pot

#2 End price for Vinyl will start be priced almost 1.5X higher by Record Store Day.

#3 Indies where only just getting back physical and this will put the kibash on any chance of #USexports, since Majors don’t

It is from these reason and the fact that Records are still an important part of how we communicate, which is part of HelpEarth’s Mission, that we support the launching of DistrictRecordPlant(tm) and it’s GOFUNDME campaign

During the unnessarly government shut down one of the people that created approached a U.S. Park Service Ranger and asked them why they and the Park Service has closed down the WWII Memorail.   HEF Founder Nelson Jacobsen thought it was just so wrong that he created a Change.org petition asking for just that.
